workout to maintain muscle strength

Let’s maintain our muscle strength!

It’s so important for aging successfully.

Why Is It Important To Maintain Muscle Mass As We Age?

Maintaining our muscular strength is crucial in being able to do not only the activities we love, but the ones that are required for daily living.

Upper body strength assists in closing car trunks, vacuuming and sweeping, mowing the yard, playing sports like tennis, pickleball, and baseball, and hobbies such as gardening, to name just a few examples.

Lower body strength comes into play for mowing the yard, getting in and out of the tub, lowering to the floor to play with grandchildren and just being able to get off the couch, out of the car, or up from the dinner table.

Even though we are in a time in our life where we are perhaps enjoying the luxury of slowing down, we can’t slow down when it comes to maintaining our health.

Taking care of our own well being is our new job so that we can maintain our independence and not need to depend on others to take on that responsibility.

So let’s stay strong, pick up our resistance bands and maintain our muscle strength to continue on our journey of successful aging!

How To Maintain Muscle Mass As You Age Using Resistance Bands

There are many ways to maintain muscle mass, namely strength training. It should be done several times a week in addition to your 150 minutes of aerobic exercise.

Today we’re going to be using resistance bands to work against our muscles, which keeps them and the joints they surround strong.

Here are the resistance bands I recommend.

These are the ones I use in my videos and in class. They come in a variety of resistance levels, each in a different color so they’re easy to identify.

Give this video a try to change up your regular strength workout, or when you’re on the go and don’t have your weights.

And if you like it, we have several other resistance band videos to try as well:
